Cementerio de Nueva Esperanza, Villa Maria del Triunfo, Peru
1st of November 2011
Nueva Esperanza is a cemetery located in the city of Lima. It is the biggest in Latin America and the second in the world. Spreading over 60 acres, it has started as a popular illegal burial ground for the city poorest inhabitants, mainly migrants from the highlands, open, informal and without registries.
On the 1st and 2nd of November, each year, more than one million people visit this location. Families, random visitors, tourists, commercials, musicians and curious in general pray, attend to the graves, dance and sing, eating and drinking, celebrating life and death, restaging old traditional and folkloric costumes associated with death, and paying their respect for the departed love ones.
"El cementerio más bello del país está en Nueva Esperanza, con sus tumbas ubicadas en una quebrada como andenes y sus fiestas costumbristas, con su cerveza y sus bandas folclóricas"
